Collaboration between South African Police Service (SAPS) units has secured the arrest of a foreign national and the confiscation of counterfeit goods with an estimated value of R48 634.

On Saturday, 19 October, between 11:00 and 21:30, members from Provincial Organised Crime (in the Northern Cape), Provincial Flash (Firearms, Liquor and Second Hand Goods), Delportshoop and Koopmanfontein SAPS operationalised information in Delportshoop regarding the alleged sale of counterfeit goods.

Identified liquor outlets and shops were searched, and this led to the arrest of one suspect and the seizure of counterfeit goods, including liquor, illicit cigarettes and counterfeit medicines and expired products.

During the search of a liquor outlet, a 13-year-old girl was found on the premises, and it was established that she was in a relationship with the owner.

The 38-year-old foreign national was arrested.

Numerous fines were issued for the contravention of the Counterfeit Goods Act 37/1997, as well as the Gambling and Liquor Act 6/2024, to the value of R8 500.

The Northern Cape SAPS said it will continue to crack down on the sale of illicit and counterfeit goods, as well as the protection of young women and girls. – SAnews.gov.za
