Pretoria - A fire onboard the Saframine Nomazwe vessel has been extinguished, while investigations into the cause of the fire continue, the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) said on Thursday.
The vessel caught fire just outside the Cape Town harbour on Thursday. Three containers aboard the ship caught fire. The ship had been carrying a consignment of charcoal which was loaded in Durban en-route Cape Town.
"Following the fire that broke out at the harbor on the vessel, Saframine Nomazwe, SAMSA surveyors discovered that there was no physical damage to the vessel and crew. The damaged containers are currently being offloaded to enable thorough inspection of entire vessel, which will provide us with a conclusive report. We are pleased that the vessel should set sail shortly," SAMSA executive head at the centre of ships, Sobantu Tilayi, said on Thursday.
According to ship owner Safmarine, there were no injuries to the ship's crew or oil pollution that has occurred as a result of the fire.
"The exact cause of the incident is yet unknown. A full investigation will be conducted. An assessment of potential damage will follow as soon as possible."
