Pretoria - The Wesselton settlement near Ermelo, which has been the scene of violent protests this week, was quiet overnight.
The protests, which saw angry residents blockading streets, damaging infrastructure and hurling stones at police, had forced National Police Commissioner, General Bheki Cele to intervene.
He deployed a large contingent of highly trained and seasoned crowd-management police officers to stabilize the area.
Cele, who visited the area himself yesterday, deployed 160 police officers to the troubled township bringing the total number of officers to more than 200.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Captain Leonard Hlathi, said the situation was calm this morning.
"It has been quiet since last night, but our police officers are still at the settlement closely monitoring the situation."
More than 100 protesters have been arrested for public violence, while a 41-year-old man is alleged to have died during the unrest on Tuesday.
