Metrobus seeks court ruling on bus drivers strike

Pretoria - Metrobus management will today approach the Labour Court in Johannesburg in a bid to have the strike by some of its bus drivers declared unlawful.

Some Metrobus drivers belonging to the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) in Johannesburg went on strike last Wednesday afternoon in protest against a new shift schedule leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

Metrobus managing director, Herman van Laar, said: "Today at noon, we are going to the Labour Court to get a ruling on whether this strike is illegal or not as this will help us on addressing this issue."

He said no buses were currently running.

"I have 450 buses and it is only 15 percent of the drivers who are embarking on this strike, but we've decided to withdraw the services of the buses as some of the drivers who are willing to work were being intimidated. One of the drivers was admitted in hospital after he was attacked by the striking bus drivers."

Negotiations between Metrobus and the striking bus drivers reached deadlock earlier this week, despite reasonable offers put on the table by the management, according to Laar.
