Boozy learners may face charges

Pretoria - Learners who were photographed drinking alcoholic ciders while on their way to school on Wednesday may face legal charges.

"We have requested the police to investigate possible charges of public drinking," said Gauteng Education Department spokesperson, Charles Phahlane.

He said their schools will also be taking disciplinary action against them.

The pictures of the three learners, two of them from Madiba Combined School and one from Mandisa Shiceka Secondary School, which were published by Sowetan newspaper, showed the three learners sipping ciders on their way to school.

Phahlane described the learners' behaviour as an absolute disgrace, not only to themselves but their families, schools and the education system as a whole.

"The learners have been identified and their parents have been called to the school to address this behaviour," Phahlane said, warning that the department will not tolerate such behaviour and will not hesitate to take stern action.
