Some unions put pen to paper

Pretoria - Some labour unions representing public servants have signed the wage agreement offer presented by the employer, with the exception of a few still consulting with their members.

Some of the signatories fall under the Congress of SA Trade Unions and Independent Labour Caucus.

It is hoped that the remaining unions will sign the offer this week or early next week.
The SA Democratic Teachers Union and the Public Servants Association are among the labour groups which did not sign the wage offer.

The Independent Labour Caucus has requested more time to allow the outstanding unions to get a new mandate from their members.

A 50.1 percent majority is needed to cement the deal.

Public Service and Administration spokesperson, Dumisani Nkwamba, confirmed the signing to BuaNews but could not say when the agreement would be implemented.

Government signed the wage agreement on 13 September and gave unions 21 working days from then to consult their members. It is offering state employees a 7.5 percent wage increase and an R800 housing subsidy.

Initially, unions demanded an 11 percent wage increase and a R1 650 monthly housing allowance. This was later revised to an 8.6 percent salary increase and a R1 000 housing allowance.

Public servants embarked on a nationwide strike, which mostly affected schools and hospitals. The strike was suspended last month.
