Pretoria - The Gauteng Education Department has issued a circular outlining the appeals process for teachers, who wish to dispute the number of days they were on strike.
On Tuesday, the department will start deducting salaries of teachers who participated in a three-week public service strike.
According to an agreement between the department and trade unions, deductions would take place in November 2010, February 2011 and March 2011 for the 17 days of the strike.
"No deductions will take place in December or January and no more than five days will be deducted per month.
"Last week, principals were informed of the strike deduction audit as well as appeals procedures. Salaries will be paid to educators on Tuesday next week so no salaries have been paid as yet except non-educator staff," the department said.
It also explained that some payslips may indicate 10 days deductions, but the department has reversed the additional five days and assured teachers that when they get their salaries on Tuesday, they will find that they have been refunded the extra five days.
Teachers disputing the number of days that they were on strike are advised to fill in a form, which has a table on the number of days of the strike, indicate the days they are disputing, attach proof and forward the form to the district strike management committee.
"The committee will make a recommendation to the district director and if accepted deductions will be reversed immediately. We are committed to reversing deductions immediately in instances where there is proof or deductions were made erroneously," the department said.
