Pretoria - The Independent Electoral Cimmission has announced that it will hold another voter registration weekend on 5 and 6 March.
This is in a bid to reach its target of 1.5 million registrations ahead of the local elections. The Minister of Cooperative Governance Sicelo Shiceka is yet to announce the date for the elections.
At the weekend, around 480 000 people registered to vote, with many more visiting voting stations to check or update their details on the voters' roll.
Ninety-eight percent of the voting stations were open on Saturday and Sunday, while nine did not open because of the flooding. These included five in Keimoes in the Northern Cape; two in Beaufort West in the Western Cape and two in Philippolis in the Free State.
In some instances, there were delays in pitching tents and officials had to use the boot of their cars to continue with registration. In Limpopo's Blouberg municipality district, IEC officials had to climb up a mountain to reach 50 households.
For the first time this year, special votes will be allowed for the ill and disabled in municipal elections. Citizens who will not be able to go to voting stations can apply to for special votes.
Registered voters are advised to SMS their ID number to 32810, contact the IEC call centre on 0800 11 8000 or visit the IEC website to check on their registration details.
