Johannesburg - Grade 12 learners will be waiting with their fingers crossed for matric results, which will be released on Thursday.

The results will be available for collection at schools on the day of release, reports Joburg.org.

Learners can also get their results via text message by registering for the SABC News Matric Results SMS Service. They can simply SMS their identity number to 35935 and their examination number in the reply SMS and receive detailed results on the day of release.

Alternatively, they can call 082 152, select option 6 and listen to their results after punching in the relevant digits on release day.

The results will also be available in The Star, The Citizen and other newspapers countrywide.

The suspension of classes during the 2010 World Cup and the public servants' strike, which began shortly afterwards, shortened schooling time dramatically. This is expected to have a bearing on the results.

In 2009, Gauteng produced a 71.8 percent pass rate when 70 000 of the 109 000 learners who wrote the exams passed. Although this was a 5 percent decline in pass rate compared to 2008, 32 597 distinctions were achieved in Gauteng, with a number of top achievers from Johannesburg.

Among last year's top performing public schools was Eqinisweni Secondary in Mofolo, Soweto. Other Gauteng schools that scored well included Hoerskool Waterkloof, Boksburg High, Zitikeni Secondary and IR Lesolang Secondary.
