Pretoria - The Bambanani mine near Welkom in the Free State remains closed on Wednesday after rescuers recovered the body of a miner who died following a rock fall.
According to the Department of Mineral Resources seismic activity of 2.1 magnitude at the mine on Monday led to eight miners being trapped underground.
Four of the workers of which three had serious injuries were rescued immediately and brought to the surface while the other two were rescued late in the afternoon on Monday. The body of the remaining miner is yet to be recovered.
"Mine management has dispatched six Proto teams consisting of rock engineers to assist in securing and clearing the area so that rescue efforts continue safely to avoid more injuries.
"The teams are working in shifts due to space constraints underground," said the department's Zingaphi Jakuja.
The department has extended its sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
