Pretoria - Government is to honour individuals and organisations that have excelled in using technology to improve the competitiveness of their enterprises at the 2010 Technology Awards.

The awards, hosted by the Department of Trade and Industry (the dti), in conjunction with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), will be held on 6 and 7 October in Johannesburg.

According to a statement by the department, the 2010 Technology Awards will be awarded in three technology programmes of the dti - namely the Support Programme for Industrial Innovation (SPII) managed by the IDC; Technology and Human Resource for Industry Programme (THRIP) managed by the National Research Foundation (NRF) and the Small Enterprise Development Agency (seda) Technology Programme (stp).

Ephraim Baloyi, Director of Innovation and Technology at the dti said the awards would recognise individuals and organisations that contributed towards technology promotion and innovation in South Africa.

"As the custodian and lead department of enterprise development in the country, it is our objective to inspire and encourage creativity, and technology innovativeness amongst business people by rewarding those that make use of technology to advance their business. Showcasing and publicising winners will go a long way in encouraging and elevating aspirant entrepreneurs," said Baloyi.

The event will also be used as an occasion for the finalists to showcase their products and services and a drive to encourage students to explore business opportunities in the technology space.
