Durban gets the party started

Durban - Almost the same fervour and atmosphere that rocked the Moses Mabhida Stadium during the 2010 FIFA World Cup pervaded the city as national Heritage Day celebrations got underway.

Enthusiastic crowds made up mainly of Shembe Church members filled up sections of the stadium as early as 9am.

The songs sung with passion reverberated as security checks were done. Members of the public were dressed in traditional clothes, with some carrying traditional musical instruments.

A jam packed programme is expected to be unveiled and the colour is ripe as Indian and Zulu dancers in their vibrant outfits gathered outside the stadium.

Padmini Dhrumlingum, who accompanied the Shree Murugan Youth Khazhagum, said her group felt honoured to be performing twice at the stadium.

"This is such a great opportunity. We get to be a part of a South African celebration and perform for the President," said Dhrumlingum.

The group is happy to celebrate their Indian heritage as well as that of South Africa. "Today is about forgetting about our challenges, just enjoying peace and our diverse cultures," said Dhrumlingum.

Meanwhile, an elated Siyabonga Ginger Phungula said he is delighted to be at the stadium and is most looking forward to listening to President Jacob Zuma's address scheduled for later this afternoon.

"The entire week, I have been hearing that the President has been saying important things but today I am here to hear him for myself," said the 22-year-old.

"I am very proud of my Zulu heritage. And today is a celebration of it," added Phungula.

He travelled to the event with a group of friends with transport that was provided for the masses.
