New Lakeside park to thrill residents

Pretoria - A picturesque dam and tranquil surroundings is what Orange Farm and Lakeside residents, in the south of Johannesburg, can look forward to once the multimillion rand park and food garden officially opens.

Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Amos Masondo, is expected to officially open the R4.5 million park in Lakeside today.

The park is just one of the new innovative additions to the city's strategy for the greening of the environment by establishing parks, planting trees and rehabilitating rivers and streams.

The park, which will be maintained by City Parks, will provide a range of entertainment possibilities for residents, including: a soccer field; water feature; braai facilities; well-lit paved pathways; themed playgrounds with rubber matting; landscaped picnic areas with trees; paved parking facilities; food gardens, and a user friendly access controlled fence.

To further support the city's greening programme in the area, some 3 200 trees have been distributed to households in the neighbourhood.

This lays a foundation for the transformation of the Greater Orange Farm area into a green oasis.
