World Cup made SA a better place

Pretoria - The 2010 FIFA World Cup made a big difference in all South Africans' lives Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe said on Wednesday.

"We can safely declare that South Africa is a better place for having hosted the 2010 World Cup," Motlanthe told a media briefing in the UK during his working visit.

The most important legacy, he said, is that of 50 million citizens whose hard work ensured a world-class tournament. Even better is the spirit of hope that the country can achieve even greater things.

Motlanthe said South Africans should use this same determination to fight poverty and inequality.

In addition, the World Cup made the world see Africa as a prospering continent.

"South Africa's work with the domestic and international private sector had repositioned the country as one that was developing rapidly," Motlanthe said.

He praised the media for spreading positive messages during the world cup around the world.

Motlanthe is in the UK to strengthen relations with Britain's new coalition government.
