Polokwane - The Limpopo Provincial Government is assessing the damage caused by severe hailstorms which hit a number of towns on Sunday night.
There are fears that people might have died in the storms.
Clayson Monyela, spokesperson for the Limpopo Department of Local Government and Housing, said they had received unconfirmed reports that lives and houses were lost.
"The affected towns were Burgersfort, Tzaneen and Polokwane. The provincial Disaster Management Centre has dispatched a team of officials to these areas to assess the damage and prepare a report," said Monyela on Monday.
He said the team would advise the department on possible interventions, depending on the severity of the storm damage.
"We are not yet sure about the scale of the damage caused, but we will know soon," he added.
Monyela warned that the summer ahead could see parts of Limpopo experiencing above average rainfall, which could cause floods.
"Extreme weather conditions, including hail storms, have been predicted for the province, but the Disaster Management Centre is ready to handle any eventuality.
"We ask communities to report any disaster, including veld fires, to their district or the provincial Disaster Management Centre, which they can contact toll free on 0800 222 111," added Monyela.
Limpopo police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Ronel Otto said police had not received any reports of casualties.
