Pretoria - The railway line between Randfontein and Johannesburg, which was closed following a train torching on Friday, is to be re-instated on Sunday.
The decision was reached after all the necessary health and safety steps were taken to ensure that a similar incident does not occur in the future, according to Metrorail's Gauteng spokesperson Tu Dlamini.
Dlamini said Metrorail, together with its stakeholders, established a steering committee to look into the circumstances which led to the train torching incident and conducted a risk assessment to map out the way forward for the Randfontein corridor.
Metrorail, in partnership with its stakeholders, including the Commuter Rail Forum worked together tirelessly to ensure they reach an amicable solution that will benefit both Metrorail and its commuters.
"The budding behaviour of burning trains each time a service disruption is encountered within the system will not be tolerated by Metrorail. It must be noted that should a similar behaviour in this corridor or any other corridor within Gauteng continue, Metrorail will not hesitate to suspend its services as we cannot guarantee services in an environment that exposes our assets and staff," said Dlamini.
Commuters and the community at large are urged to come forward with information that will lead to the arrest and conviction of the train torching perpetrators.
Dlamini said all information will be treated with utmost confident.
