Pretoria-Banyana Banyana's CAF African Women Championship campaign got off to a good start when they beat Tanzania 2-1 at the Sinaba Stadium in Daveyton on Sunday.
Banyana have bagged three points, paving their way to qualifying for the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup in Germany. Only two teams will represent the continent at the Women's World Cup.
The tournament got off to an exciting start when the visiting side tried to get an early goal, but were denied by the wood work.
Banyana were in control of the match, but lost many goal scoring opportunities until Mamphashe Popela scored a brilliant opening goal.
However, their excitement was short-lived when the Banyana defense was caught off-guard and Chabruma Esther Fred scored the equaliser for the visiting side.
The combination of Popela and Limpopo born striker, Noko Matlou, was lethal. They created various scoring opportunities for their side, but failed to produce results.
Kylie-Ann Louw came into the game in the late stages and her first touch in the box won Banyana a penalty after a Tanzanian defender handled the ball in the box.
Mamello Makhabane's well taken penalty put the home-side in the lead.
In July, Banyana Banyana beat Tanzania 6-0 in an international friendly at Makhulong Stadium as part of their preparations for the 2010 CAF African Women Championship.
Banyana's next match is against African powerhouse Nigeria on Thursday November 4 at Sinaba Stadium at 11 am.
