Pretoria - The extension to the southbound off-ramp at the Rivonia interchange will be opened to traffic on Friday, bringing much relief to motorists.
The southbound off-ramp was being extended to provide a new free-flow off-ramp onto Rivonia road north, said the South African Roads Agency Limited (Sanral)
Sanral warned that the opening would affect traffic patterns and called on the public to be patient.
Traffic on the N1 travelling south (towards Roodepoort), wishing to access Rivonia Road (north), will exit the freeway at the current southbound off-ramp but will have to diverge (keep right) shortly after leaving the freeway.
According to Sanral, this new right diverge will provide dedicated free-flow access to Rivonia Road (North) towards Sunninghill.
The existing left diverge will remain as is - terminating on Rivonia Road and providing access to Rivonia Road (South) towards Sandton only.
Traffic signals will be adjusted to allow for the new traffic patterns. If required, Sanral said traffic movements at the intersections will initially be controlled by points men until the traffic stabilises.
Although the opening of this phase will complete the opening of new ramps at the interchange ancillary, Sanral said construction works will continue in the interchange area for some time and motorists are requested to be patient until all work is completed.
"We apologise in advance for any inconvenience that will be caused by this implementation process as well as the completion of all construction work in the area."
The interchange which provides access to and from the N1 to Rivonia, Sandton and Sunninghill, is part of the of Sanral's Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project.
