Durban - With the aim of meeting the socio-economic goals in South Africa, Water and Environmental Affairs Deputy Minister Rejoice Mabudafhasi launched the Isipingo Adopt a River Project.
During the Budget Vote Speech in April this year the department announced that one of their key priorities is the protection of the country's water resources.
With high polluted levels, the conditions of rivers across the country have deteriorated, and have become dumping areas for all types of waste.
The launch of Adopt-a-River project is aimed at creating awareness to the communities about the need and importance of protecting water resources.
"The communities will be empowered with knowledge and skills that will enable them to participate actively in water resource management and make informed decisions and be water ambassadors," said Mabudafhasi.
The deputy minister said that R1.7 million has been allocated for Isipingo Adopt a River Project.
There is another plus side to the project - it will create jobs and training opportunities for women.
One hundred women from the Umlazi area will continue with the cleaning of the river for a period of 12 months.
They will be afforded a stipend on a monthly basis and will also be offered accredited training on water resource management.
"We decided to hold this event in August to acknowledge the women who always work tirelessly for the development of their areas despite the challenges...
"Without women there is no life. I salute the women of Umlazi residing along Isipingo river for initiating the cleaning of the river as volunteers since last year. They identified the problem and embarked on action, typical women of South Africa, they did not fold their arms and wait for government," said Mabudafhasi.
The provincial and local government and communities will sign a pledge as a commitment to own the Adopt a River Project.
"We will not rest until our water resources are conserved and protected for growth and development," said the deputy minister.
