Pretoria - Though government has welcomed the end of the municipal workers strike, the destruction of property will not be tolerated, Cabinet said on Thursday.
"Government condemns the continued trashing of our cities. This is totally unacceptable.
"The destruction of property and throwing of rubbish in the streets will never be an acceptable way of highlighting grievances," said government spokesperson Themba Maseko.
Government urged union leaders to educate their members about the need for those protesting to do so in a mature and measured manner.
On Wednesday, the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) and the South African Local Government Association (Salga) signed an agreement ending the ten-day strike.
Among some of their grievances workers were calling on the association to implement a uniform job grading system.
The strike has resulted in uncollected refuse lining the streets of Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town.
