Housing contractors warned

Klerksdorp - North West MEC for Human Settlements Desbo Mohono has warned emerging contractors that her department will not tolerate shoddy work.

Speaking at the Provincial Emerging Contractors' Conference at the weekend, Mohono said her department will empower emerging businesses and ensure that they understand that 'emerging' is not the same as sub-standard quality.

She said she would insist that all contractors, who build houses for the poor, understand that people deserve decent and quality houses.

"As government and the business sector, we must frown upon any contractor who takes our people for a ride.

"As an industry, we have a responsibility to build houses that contribute towards the restoration of our people's dignity", she said.

However, Mohono warned that her department would blacklist any company or individual found to have been part of any form of fronting.

She said her department was concerned that some of the benefits and opportunities brought by Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment, have not gone to their intended beneficiaries as a result of the scourge of fronting.

"No economy or society can develop and sustain itself on the basis of "rent-a-black" or "rent-a-woman," she warned.
