Tunis - Afriqiyah Airways said in a statement there were 93 passengers and 11 crew members aboard the plane, which crashed at Tripoli airport early Wednesday morning.
The statement said that search and rescue work was underway, but did not give details about the casualties and survivors.
Some local media reports said that an eight-year-old Dutch boy survived the crash.
The Afriqiyah Airways Airbus 303 was flying from Johannesburg to Tripoli when the accident took place at about 6am (0400 GMT). The plane, Flight 8U771, crashed during the process of landing, said the airport authorities.
Earlier media reports said that 105 people were killed.
South African International Relations and Cooperation spokesperson Soul Molobi told BuaNews that at this stage they could not confirm if they were South Africans onboard.
"At this stage, we are working with the Libyan authorities who are investigating the crash, once they are done they will inform us about the details of passengers.
"At this stage we are waiting for a report from the authorities," Molobi said.
Molobi said they were also working with the South African Embassy in Libya.
South African Airways spokesperson Fani Zulu confirmed that the plane was not a South African Airways plane. "All our planes that left the country last night landed safely," he said.
