Giyani - Millions of rands will be spent on planting trees over the next two years in an effort to aesthetically improve Limpopo. .
Greater Giyani Municipality mayor Doris Mathebula said the campaign would include planting trees at government buildings, schools and clinics, while households would also be encouraged to "green" their environment.
"We hope to see Limpopo turning into a Garden of Eden," Mathebula said at the Giyani Community Hall during the official launch of the Greening Limpopo project.
She said her municipality had received R39-million from the national Department of Environmental Affairs for the project, which would also include an intensive street clean-up.
"We have received a further R14-million for parks in the town of Giyani. At the moment, government buildings are in a bad shape, but soon they will look different and investors will like what they'll see," the mayor said.
Last year, government launched a pilot Comprehensive Rural Development Programme in Giyani.
Since the launch, 231 houses had been built, while access to health and education has improved, infrastructure had been provided to support agricultural development and training to the community.
