All eyes on Spain, Portugal knock-out match

Pretoria - Football fans across the globe are readying for one of the greatest World Cup spectacles ever when Spain take on Portugal in a knock-out match that will earn either team a spot in the quarter-finals.

The two teams will clash at Green Point Stadium in Cape Town at 20:30. Portuguese fans have already planned a colourful parade.

Vasco fans will assemble at the Vasco da Gama club house at 16:00 before they travel by train to Central station to join other fans at the FIFA Fan Fest.

After their celebrations at the Fan Fest, the Portuguese will then walk the famous Capetonian Fan Mile.

Mario Das Nevas from the Vasco da Gama said: "We are really looking forward to the 2010 FIFA World Cup clash against Spain and can't wait to get ready for the match.

"We are passionate fans and are proud to travel to the city with so many South African Portuguese football lovers," he said, adding that Portugal will beat Spain 2-1.

The Portuguese advanced to the knock-out stages as Group G runners-up with five points. They played to a goalless draw with both Ivory Coast and Brazil, before they broke the 2010 FIFA World Cup record by thrashing North Korea 7-nil.

The Spaniards entered the 2010 FIFA World Cup as one of the top favourites and they easily advanced to the last 16, despite their 1-nil loss to Switzerland.

Nicknamed La Roja, the European champions progressed to the knockout phase, finishing top of group H after they beat Chile 2-1 and Honduras 2-nil.

The winner will join Brazil, Germany, Uruguay, Ghana and Argentina in the quarter-finals, while the loser will be heading home.

Overall Spain has appeared in 49 games in the World Cup Finals, their record is 22 wins, 15 losses and 12 draws.

In another knock-match, Japan will take on Paraguay at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Tshwane at 16:00.
