Pretoria - An African Union (AU) High-Level Panel will travel to Egypt, this week, to meet with all the Egyptian stakeholders and brief the AU Peace and Security Council on its mission.
The decision was taken on Monday after AU Commission Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma met with the Special Envoy of the Interim President of Egypt Mona Omar, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
They also agreed that any need for further AU engagement with the interim Egyptian authorities would be decided after the report of the AU High-Level Panel is handed to the AU Peace and Security Council.
“We have agreed that we will send the panel there and they will meet with everybody and come back and inform us…The panel is made up of President Konarie former President of Mali and former Chairperson of the AU, former President Mogae of Botswana and the former Prime Minister of Djibouti,” Dlamini Zuma said during the joint press briefing after the meeting.
The AU High-Level Panel will leave for Egypt on Saturday.
Tensions have been high in Egypt after armed forces removed President Mohamed Morsi from his post last week after millions of protesters demanded his removal due to his “maladministration" since he was elected a year ago.
The country’s constitution was also suspended. Adli Mansour has been sworn in as Egypt's caretaker president. On Monday evening, he approved a constitutional declaration for the transitional period, which is set to last six months.
Omar used the meeting with Dlamini Zuma to convey the position of Egypt’s interim government on the decision of the AU Peace and Security Council on suspending Egypt until the return to constitutional order. - SAnews.gov.za
