AU wishes Madiba Happy Birthday

Thursday, July 18, 2013

Pretoria - The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, says the African Union has joined the world in wishing former President Nelson Mandela a happy and healthy 95th birthday.

“The values of solidarity, humanity, reconciliation and service to the ordinary people that Madiba practiced and contributed to throughout his life are the very foundation of the shared values the African Union is promoting, and which guides it as it celebrates the OAU/AU 50 years Anniversary and develops Africa Agenda 63 towards an Africa that is prosperous and at peace with itself and a major player in global affairs,” said the chairperson in a statement on Thursday.

Madiba’s birthday on 18 July has been declared International Mandela Day.

The former statesman was admitted to the Medi-Clinic Heart Hospital with a recurring lung infection earlier this month. His doctors have said he is steadily improving.

Dlamini Zuma called on the entire continent to continue to pray for the speed recovery of Madiba.

She said the anti-apartheid hero was “a source of inspiration and hope to millions across the Africa and across the world”. – SAnews.gov.za
