Johannesburg - The national squad were lucky to get some Madiba Magic on Wednesday - and much needed too - ahead of their Confederations Cup encounter with Brazil.
Madiba met the national team at his offices in Houghton, to wish them well and give them a few words of inspiration ahead of their semi-final clash against the reigning champions of the Confederations Cup, Brazil. The match will be played at Ellis Park on Thursday evening.
Introducing the team, all wearing "Mandela Day" t-shirts, to his grandfather, Ndaba Mandela said: "We wish you all the best in the upcoming game. We know you are going to be victorious."
Quipping with Coach Joel Santana, the former Robben Islander said to much laughter: "Your face looks familiar!"
Madiba also sported a "Mandela Day" t-shirt - made for the day, which will be launched on the former President's 91st birthday on 18 July.
Announced during President Jacob Zuma's State of the Nation Address, earlier this month, the day is dedicated to celebrating the life and legacy of Madiba, as well as to encourage people around the world to do something good in their communities.
It is hoped that the day, will be celebrated annually and start an international movement for change.
Bafana Bafana captain Aaron Mokoena also presented Madiba with a team shirt with his name and the number 91, in honour of his upcoming birthday.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Achmat Dangor said Madiba had himself expressed a wish to meet South Africa's national team ahead of the tough match, to wish them well.
"We are confident that Bafana Bafana will do their best and will make us proud," he said.
