Pretoria - Johannesburg Water (JW) has warned residents against bogus agents pretending to be JW employees testing water in order to gain access to properties.
"Our laboratory has received calls from concerned residents complaining about agents claiming to represent JW wanting to test the quality of tap water in their properties," said JW spokesperson, Baldwin Matsimela.
Matsimela pointed out that water samples in the city were taken by qualified scientists with JW identity cards and branded vehicles.
He further noted that the quality of Johannesburg's tap water has been rated the cleanest in the country and awarded the prestigious Blue Drop status by the Department of Water Affairs, which confirms the City of Joburg as the number one provider of the cleanest, healthiest and refreshing water of the highest quality in the country.
To ensure that this status is maintained, Matsimela said JW routinely tested over 500 drinking water samples per month.
"Tap water samples are taken from bulk supply to reservoirs across the city, including samples from informal settlements areas. The samples are taken to Cydna Laboratory, [accredited by] the South African National Accreditation System, where 41 determinants are tested and analysed.
"Through this rigorous testing and monitoring process, we are able to respond quickly to any water quality problems and ensure that the quality of every drop of the more of the billion litres of water that passes through our network is well within the South African Bureau of Standards' [quality] for Class One Drinking Water," Matsimela said.
He advised residents to alert police or security agencies should they be approached by unidentified and suspicious agents. - BuaNews
