Brazil, Chile to fight for quarter final slot

Monday, June 28, 2010

Pretoria - The next World Cup hosts, Brazil, will be looking to book themselves a place in the quarter-finals when they take on World number 18 Chile in a knock out match at Ellis Park Stadium on Monday evening.

Brazil has qualified for the World Cup knock out stage for the fifth consecutive time.

The pair has met on 65 previous occasions with the Brazilians clinching 46 victories and the two sides leveling 12 matches.

Brazil has also won the last seven meetings, although Chile's last victory over the Samba Boys was a 3-nil whip on 15 August 2000. But Brazilian Coach Dunga will not be approaching the match undermining his opponents as the La Roja's recent showings speak volumes.

Coached by the experienced Argentinian Marcelo Bielsa, the Chileans qualified for the finals with some ease, atoning for poor performances in the qualifying competitions for Korea/Japan 2002 and Germany 2006, when they finished ninth and seventh respectively.

The side, which boasts the youngest average age of all the South American teams, finished second in the continental qualifying group, just one point behind Brazil. That performance, their best since the group format was introduced, was rounded off in style with a spectacular 4-2 win in Colombia in October, a result that rubber-stamped their return to the world elite with one game remaining.

Brazil and Chile have squared up twice in the FIFA World Cup each time in the knock out stage both won by Brazil. Kick-off is at 20:00.
