Pretoria – The business community on Thursday congratulated former President Nelson Mandela on his 95th birthday.
“International Mandela Day has already united the world in recognition of the great role that Mandela played in ushering in a new era for South Africa and indeed the world,” the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI) CEO Neren Rau said.
Today marks the global icon’s 95th birthday. The former President, who became the first democratically elected president in South Africa, has been in hospital since 8 June.
“SACCI hopes that the legacy of Mandela will inspire all South Africans towards nation building,” said Rau.
Meanwhile, Proudly South African has called on the country to honour the former statesman by living out his legacy.
“Madiba's life is testimony to the fact that every individual can make a positive difference in our communities and our country. His life should inspire us all to continue his legacy, with Ubuntu at the core of everything we do - and how we treat our fellow South Africans," said Proudly SA's CEO Advocate Leslie Sedibe.
The body, which was established during Mandela’s presidency, has also urged the nation to continue praying for Mandela.
Proudly SA’s mandate is to promote the uptake of local products and services to create jobs as well as to promote national pride, patriotism and social cohesion.
Meanwhile, state entity Transnet, through the Transnet Foundation, is converting and refurbishing some of the disused Transnet real estates in De Aar, Northern Cape, into a youth development hub.
This is part of the day’s theme of providing shelter to those in need.
The Youth Precinct will consist of, among others, a shelter for 20 homeless boys. It will take homeless boys off the streets and place them in a healthy environment from which they can be reintegrated into their families, society or be equipped with self-sustaining life skills. - SAnews.gov.za
