Pretoria - Cabinet has approved the gazetting of the terms and conditions - including updated tariffs - that will apply to users of the toll road network in Gauteng.
This comes after the Inter-Ministerial Committee on the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP) briefed Cabinet yesterday. The committee has been holding engagements with stakeholders such as Cosatu, religious leaders and the Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance on the GFIP.
"This launches a 30-day period for public comment, allowing people beyond those groups with whom the Inter-Ministerial Committee has formally consulted to make their input.
"Government will, at the end of 30 days, incorporate this round of public comment and publish its final position after a further 14 days," said acting Cabinet spokesperson Phumla Williams in a statement on Thursday.
A media briefing is expected to be held on Friday "for further clarity on the matter".
In September the Constitutional Court opened the way for the GFIP system to be implemented when it set aside a Pretoria High Court ruling made in April that prevented the system from going ahead, pending a judicial review in November.
This means SANRAL and the Department of Transport are legally entitled to begin rolling out the system.
Williams said Cabinet had welcomed the "convergence of thinking on some areas between government and the majority of the stakeholders". She added that Cabinet had paid tribute to the leadership demonstrated by the delegations that met government. - SAnews.gov.za
