Pretoria - South Africa will for the first time have a unified sports sector with all the role players working towards the same objectives and sports transformation that will be addressed in a holistic way.

This was announced by Collins Chabane, Minister in the Presidency: Performance Monitoring and Evaluation, on Friday, who said that Cabinet at its ordinary meeting on Thursday had approved the National Sports and Recreation Plan.

"This plan is a major milestone for the country as it paves the way for South Africa to have for the first time a unified sports sector with all the role players working towards the same objectives as well as sports transformation that will be addressed in a holistic way," said the minister.

Cabinet noted that the approval of the plan would result in a need to review the legal framework of the South African sports systems, improved institutional mechanism and a new funding model.

Cabinet approved that the comprehensive costing of this plan be finalised in consultation with the Minister of Finance Pravin Gordhan and various Cabinet processes to be followed.
