Pretoria - Cabinet has welcomed the high number of eligible voters who heeded the call to register during the initial registration drive for the 2014 general elections.
According to Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) chairperson Advocate Pansy Tlakula, a total of 1 088 015 new first time voters registered during the voter registration weekend.
The IEC had set aside 9 and 10 November as voter registration days ahead of next year’s general elections. During the registration weekend, 2 512 219 were assisted at the country’s 22 263 registration stations.
Addressing reporters on Thursday at a Post Cabinet briefing, Public Service and Administration Minister, and Acting Minister for Performance Monitoring and Evaluation Lindiwe Sisulu said: “Eligible voters who have not yet registered are reminded the period of registration continues up until the announcement of the date for the next national elections”.
She said Cabinet further commended the work of the IEC and calls on all South Africans to exercise their democratic right to vote, which came as a result of the struggle for freedom and democracy. - SAnews.gov.za
