Pretoria - Home Affairs has set up a cell centre to help Zimbabwean nationals with queries related to regulating their stay in South Africa.

"Zimbabwean nationals are urged to call 0800 864 488 or 0800 601 190 with their enquiries. Both numbers can be used [free of charge]," said Home Affairs Director General, Mkuseli Apleni, on Wednesday.

He urged those who had illegal South African documentation to hand it over at Home Affairs offices, without the fear of prosecution.

"However, those applying for the appropriate South African documentation - work, study or business permits - will be required to have their Zimbabwean passports in order," Apleni added.

Zimbabwean authorities in Harare and its representatives in South Africa have promised to help nationals get the necessary Zimbabwean documents.

Home Affairs has deployed additional staff to the all its regional offices across the country to ensure that Zimbabwean nationals are attended to swiftly.

Zimbabweans have until 31 December to get their documents in order and legalise their stay in South Africa or face deportation.

This comes after Home Affairs announced that a special dispensation, which gives Zimbabweans who came to South Africa the right to live, work, education and access basic health care, will come to an end at the end of the year.
