Companies to vie for top honours

Pretoria - Thirty-one companies will vie for top honours at the Technology Awards hosted by the Department of Trade and Industry this week.

The ceremony, to be held in Polokwane on Thursday, will honour companies, projects and individuals and organisations that contributed towards technology development and innovation.

The purpose of the awards is to raise awareness of the benefits of using technology to improve a business's competitiveness.

Minister Rob Davies said of the awards: "By virtue of being selected as finalists, all the projects and individuals are already winners. Their contribution in the world of innovation and technology will be acknowledged, celebrated and recognised. They will inspire their peers."

Among the finalists is Guard-4-Sure Security Services (Pty) Ltd based in Gauteng and Prof GPAG Van Zijl based in Stellenbosch.

The finalists have been supported by the department's three technology programmes namely Support Programme for Industrial Innovation (SPII) managed by the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), Technology and Human Resources for Industry Programme (THRIP) which is managed by the National Research Foundation (NRF), and the Seda Technology Programme (Stp) managed by the Small Enterprise Development Agency (Seda).
