Corrupt health officials sacked

Pretoria – Forty-five employees from various healthcare facilities around Gauteng have been dismissed after they were found to have been involved in fraudulent activities, says the Gauteng Health Department.

The department on Wednesday said it has zero tolerance to incidents of fraud and corruption.

Two staff members were dismissed over cases of theft that include money and motor vehicle accident files. The department said certain lawyers would approach the staff members to get hold of confidential files and use them to fraudulently open cases against the department for patients who were involved in accidents.

The department said it dismissed 35 employees for embarking on an unprotected strike.

The other eight were dismissed for cases of misconduct, fraud and corruption such as the use of government stamps to validate fraudulent birth certificates; the use of government cars without authorisation and dereliction of duty; presenting fraudulent medical certificates; absence without leave; refusal to carry out duties; aggressive behaviour and failure to take cognisance of management; deliberate offences against staff and patients; failure to rotate in the workplace as per instructions by management and failure to show regard for patients.

Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu has warned officials to steer away from fraudulent activities.

“The department will not tolerate any employee involved in any corrupt activity. As public servants, we have a duty to always promote the culture of honesty and good governance while discharging our functions.

“We will not hesitate to take disciplinary action against anyone suspected of being involved in fraud and corrupt activities,” said MEC Mahlangu. - SAnews.gov.za
