Pretoria - The Class of 2010 will this morning begin writing their final matric examinations.
The first papers are Computer Application Technology Paper 2 and Information Technology Paper 2. Learners will begin writing the three-hour papers at 9am.
Most students will, however, sit for their first exam on Thursday with Afrikaans Home language Paper 1 and Afrikaans First Additional Language Paper 1 and Afrikaans Second Additional Language Paper 1.
This year 642 691 pupils have registered for the exams, 562 473 of which are full time candidates and 80 218 part time pupils. During the exams, 127 marking centres will be set up, with a total of 38 874 markers. A total of 198 papers will be written in 39 subjects in about 800 exam centres.
Examination scripts in all provinces, with the exception of Gauteng, will be marked from 4 to 15 December. Marking in Gauteng will begin on 19 November.
The school year has seen a few challenged including the public sector strike and long mid-year holidays due to the World Cup. However, catch-up programmes and learning camps were put in place to help learners prepare and write their exams to the best of their ability.
