Pretoria - Members of the public wishing to register to attend public hearings into Eskom's 16% tariff increase to the National Energy Regulator have until 4 January to do so.

The public hearings into the power utility's request will be held nationwide from 15 January to 31 January 2013.

"Members of the public and stakeholders wishing to attend and/or make oral representations at the public hearings are requested to specify which hearing they will be attending by registering. The closing date for registration is Friday, 4 January 2013," said the energy regulator on Thursday.

The public can register by calling 012 401 4715/4033 or faxing 012 401 4700. Members of the public can also register by email on publichearings@nersa.org.za.

Eskom has asked the National Energy Regulator of SA (Nersa) for a total 16% tariff increase over the next five years.

The utility is asking the regulator for 13% for each of the five years for its own needs, plus 3% to support the introduction of Independent Power Producers (IPPs).

The hearings, said Nersa, are in line with its commitment to being transparent and broadening public participation in its decision-making process.

The public hearings will kick off at Western Cape, Cape Town International Convention Centre on 15 January. The Eastern Cape will have its chance at the Summerstrand Hotel in Marine Drive the next day.

Public hearings in KwaZulu-Natal will be held at the Durban International Convention Centre on Thursday 17 January.

The hearings then move to the Free State's Mangaung Metro Council Building on 21 January followed by the Northern Cape, Kimberley at the Christian Revival Church (CRC) .

The North West will have its chance when hearings will be held at Potchefstroom's Elgro Hotel the Wednesday and Mpumalanga's Orion Hotel in Nelspruit on 25 January.

The hearings will then move to Limpopo's Jack Botes Hall in Polokwane on 29 January. Gauteng will get its chance on the 30 and 31 January at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand.

All the hearings will kick off at 8:30 am and close at 5pm.

The deadline for written submissions to Nersa in respect of the request was on 20 November.
