Port Elizabeth - The news of the death of three Port Elizabeth ward councillors has been met with shock and dismay in the Eastern Cape.

Nelson Mandela Bay Metro (NMBM) councillors Mxolisi Gumenge, Phumeza Lose and Noncedo Ngqondi died after the mini-bus taxi they and 11 other councillors were traveling in overturned on the road between Alexandria and Nanaga on their way back from East London on Monday.

"It is with deep sadness and great shock that the council and officials of Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality learnt of the tragic loss of three councillors. Our deepest condolences go to their families, friends and constituencies," said NMBM media management officer Kupido Baron.

The councillors were studying towards certificates in Local Government Law and Public Administration at the Nelson Mandela Law School at the University of Fort Hare in East London campus.

They were on their way back to Port Elizabeth on Monday evening when the accident happened.

Baron said the councillors were young, vibrant and hard-working individuals who had a bright future ahead of them and were dedicated to transforming the metro into a better place for residents.

He said the council took comfort in knowing that the three had had the opportunity to make a difference and see real change in their communities.

"Our thoughts also go to the councillors who were injured in the accident and our fervent hope is that they will recover fully to rejoin us in council," said Baron.

A special council meeting was held on Tuesday at the municipal chambers to deal with the consequences of the accident, after which Mayor Zanoxolo Wayile, councillors, church leaders, stakeholders and family members visited the accident scene.

Baron said details of the memorial services and funeral arrangements for the deceased councillors would be announced soon.
