Defence members injured at air show

Pretoria - The Department of Defence will convene a board of inquiry following a freak accident at the Waterkloof Air Force Base, which left members of the force seriously injured

Fourteen members of the South African National Defence Force from 44Parachute Battalion were involved in a freak accident during a 'Mass Parachute Jump' at the Defence Air Show on Saturday.

The cause of accident is still unknown.

Of the fourteen, four sustained serious injuries and were immediately airlifted to 1Military Hospital in Pretoria. All four are reportedly stable.

According to Colonel Petrus Motlhabane of the Defence Force, the 10 other members suffered minor injuries and were rushed to 1Military Hospital by two ambulances, and are said to be stable.

The show was in preparation of the Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD 2012) event to be held in Cape Town.

AAD 2012 is one of the world's premier aerospace and defence events and holds a prominent position within the aviation and defence calendar.
