Pretoria - The Department of Public Works says that no refurbishments of the Presidential estate to the tune of R170m are to take place.

Public Works Minister Gwen Mahlangu-Nkabinde, in March this year ordered the cancellation of refurbishments to the Presidential residence and indicated that these will be done internally by the department.

Similarly, the Acting Director-General, Mandla Mabuza, equally instructed the department's Projects and Professional services unit to commence with the work.

The department added that no work had commenced and no money has been spent in this regard.

"It is totally false that the department is going to spend R170 million to refurbish these assets," the department said in a statement.

The department also confirms that some officials submitted to Parliament false information regarding these figures.

Accordingly, the Acting Director-General, has ordered an investigation to determine the conduct of these officials.

"Once the investigation has been concluded, the department will act accordingly," the department said.
