Durban cashes in on traffic offenders

Pretoria - More than R3.8 million has been collected in Kwazulu-Natal since the beginning of the amnesty for outstanding traffic fines, Durban police said on Wednesday.

Motorists have until the end of March 2011 to take advantage of the 50 percent traffic fines amnesty.

Head of the Fine Processing Department, Rajen Reddy, said only fines issued before 1 October 2010 will receive a discount of 50 percent.

However, all fines issued from 1 October 2010 onwards will receive a 50 percent discount provided that they were paid within 32 days.

"Should you have many fines under your name, ensure that you pay them within the stipulated period. Motorists should also be aware that the discounted fines should have been accumulated within the municipal boundaries," said Reddy.

EThekwini Municipality was owed over R950 million in outstanding traffic fines when it launched another amnesty period in September.

At the time, officials said they had decided on another amnesty period following the success of the one held in 2008, which reportedly yielded around R100 million.
