Eighth SASSA official hands herself over to police

Monday, March 24, 2025

A Johannesburg-based South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) office official, who has been on the run, has handed herself over at the Kliptown Police Station.

This follows the court appearance of seven SASSA officials in the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court on 18 March 2025, who are facing more than 1 000 fraud-related charges.

The suspects appeared alongside three of their accomplices, who are not in the employ of SASSA.

The matter was postponed to 1 April 2025 for a bail hearing.

SASSA confirmed on Monday that the official handed herself over on Sunday, 23 March 2025, accompanied by her lawyer.

The agency has welcomed the latest developments, noting that this brings to eight the number of SASSA officials allegedly involved in various counts of fraud.

“SASSA is pleased by the latest development and hopes that the law will take its course to make people accountable for their actions. As SASSA, we will continue to work with the law enforcement agencies and provide them with all the necessary information at our disposal that they need to ensure successful prosecution of all those involved,” said SASSA national spokesperson, Paseka Letsatsi.

Letsatsi said this is part of an ongoing process by the agency, directed by Social Development Minister, Nokuzola Tolashe, to clamp down on fraud and corrupt activities in all SASSA offices across the country.

SASSA has appealed to members of the public to work with the agency and report grant fraud and corruption to 0800 60 10 11, or the National Anti-Corruption Hotline at 0800 701 701. – SAnews.gov.za
