Pretoria - Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Mondli Gungubele says the municipality has set aside R23 000 to fix the gravestone of the late secretary-general of the South African Communist Party (SACP) and anti-apartheid activist, Chris Hani.
Gungubele condemned the desecration of the headstone, saying it showed "disrespect" for Hani, who did a great deal to fight for equal rights for all.
"I have instructed our investigation team to leave no stone unturned in investigating this incident so that the perpetrators are put behind bars where they belong," he said.
The vandalised headstone was discovered by municipal workers at Thomas Nkobi Cemetery and was subsequently reported to the police. Repairs to the headstone are expected to take three weeks.
Gungubele was confident this would be done in time for Hani's commemoration month, which is April.
Hani was assassinated on 10 April 1993 by Januzs Walus, an anti-Communist Polish refugee.
