Pretoria - Western Cape Grade 12 pupils will breathe sighs of relief on Friday as the last exams of their schooling careers draw to a close.

While some learners in that province have already completed their exams, those who count Religion Studies, Civil Technology, Hospitality Studies and Sports and Exercise Science among their subjects will finally get to put the books away on Friday.

Western Cape MEC for Education, Donald Grant, said he was pleased with the way in which the exams had unfolded so far.

"These examinations are a huge logistical exercise and I would like to thank our highly dedicated and committed team, for their professional conduct throughout the exam process," he said.

But the hard work is far from over. The marking process will begin on 8 December and is expected to be completed by 15 December, Grant added.

The Western Cape Education Department has appointed 3 700 people to mark the 800 0000 exam scripts that have been completed.

"To ensure a uniform, high standard of marking, a percentage of scripts and markers will also be moderated (remarked) by senior markers appointed for this purpose," he said.

Strict security measures will also be in place at the marking centres.

Results are expected to be released on 6 January 2011.

Meanwhile, Grant appealed to those pupils who intended marking the end of the exams with "matric rage" parties to exercise caution and to celebrate responsibly.
