Escaped Pretoria prisoner hands himself over

Friday, February 18, 2011

Pretoria - Escaped life sentence prisoner, Nhlanhla Manda, has been rearrested at Bundu Inn, near Denelton in Mpumalanga.

Manda had escaped from Kalafong Hospital last week. He was sentenced to life in July 2007 for murder and robbery. He was serving his sentence at Zonderwater Correctional Centre.

Manda contacted Brigadier Masha of the South African Police Services in Mpumalanga to hand himself over. He was rearrested last night at about 7pm.

Correctional Services National Commissioner, Tom Moyane, attributes this to the pressure put on Manda by the police, media and public.

"It is this level of collaboration that pushed the escapee to hand himself over to the police and correctional officials," said Commissioner Moyane.

Moyane said the message is clear to those still on the run and those contemplating escaping from custody that even if they manage to run, "they cannot hide" any where in South Africa.

Manda will now stay at the Pretoria Correctional Centre until the investigation and disciplinary processes have taken place.

The two officials responsible for guarding him at the hospital are still on suspension, pending the finalisation of the investigation and disciplinary action.

Manda is expected to face a further charge of escaping from lawful custody, which may carry a maximum sentence of five years behind bars.
