Pretoria - Forty-three families, evacuated on Monday morning from the Themba Khoza informal settlement on the banks of the Kaal River due to floods, have returned to their homes.

City of Joburg Emergency Management spokesperson, Percy Morokane, said the families were temporarily placed at the Ivory Park South African Police Service and thereafter sheltered at a local community hall.

Several NGOs have donated relief items in the form of blankets, food parcels and clothing.

A disaster management team is also handing out clothes, blankets and food at Kaalfontein Extension 5, Themba Khoza and Baghdad informal settlements, Ebony Park and Rabie Ridge.

Morokane said they were in the process of repairing roads, storm-water drainage and sewer systems, and electrical infrastructure, removing waste and debris and restoring water supply.

The City is also taking measures to reduce flooding risk by increasing storm-water drainage and channeling.
