Family expo to promote positive parenting

Pretoria - In an effort to promote positive parenting and behaviour, the Western Cape Department of Social Development will be hosting family expos across the province.

The expositions, which forms part of the province's celebrations of International Day for Families, will be held in Cape Town, Worcester, Oudtshoorn and Vredendal from 14 to 23 May 2010.

Themed "Promoting, Protecting, and Strengthening Families: Families and Communities Working Together and Building on Strengths", the expos are a collaboration between the Department of Social Development, other government departments and civil society organisations.
Head of Social Development, Koleka Lubelwana said the department identified the family as the most basic unit of society to be strengthened so that it can continue to play its rightful role in societies including psychologically, economically, spiritually, physically and as a champion of social care and protecting its members.
"Our strategic goal is to foster resilient, caring families and communities and protect the vulnerable, this collaborative venture aims to strengthen family and community life by creating mass awareness of services and opportunities available to families," Lubelwana said.
The expositions will focus on building social cohesion through family strengthening, create mass awareness of services and opportunities available to families.
They will also focus on building cooperative partnerships between all spheres of government and civil society partners.
They will further seek to deepen dialogues and understanding through one-on-one and group consultations, seminars on a variety of issues like positive parenting, Children's Act, family policy, social grants, substance abuse, older persons' programmes, disability programmes and health
During the events, non-governmental organisations and various departments will showcase services rendered to families.
From 14 to 16 May, the expos will be held at the Western Cape Sport School and Kleinplasie in Worcester, and from 21 to 23 May they will be held at Toekomsrus community hall in Oudtshoorn and Vredendal sport ground.
