Fresh, new vibe for 2011 local elections

Wednesday, January 12, 2011

Johannesburg - Young, spunky and fresh are hardly words one would associate with the serious business of elections, but the IEC is confidently venturing into new ground and tapping into the millions of young South Africans who have yet to register to vote.

Speaking at the launch of the 2011 municipal elections logo at the Gallagher Convention Centre, Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) chairperson, Adv. Brigalia Bam, pressed upon the nation's youth to take advantage of their constitutional right to vote.

"We encourage the youth to play an active part in democracy," said Bam, who congratulated the matrics on a job well done in their final exams.

Many of the matriculants, some of whom have recently turned 18, will be first time voters this year.

The IEC currently has 23.1 million people on the voters' roll. It would like to net 1.5 million more and the youth is the next logical step for the IEC to reach its goal.

The "Love your South Africa" logo and ad campaigns that go with it has all the right things that resemble the vibe and fashion of today's youth culture, and just enough urban character to let it speak to the millions of young South Africans - and certainly those who are young at heart.

Beyond the fun and charming nature of the logo and ad campaigns, the words "Love your South Africa" echo a far deeper meaning. South Africans are reminded that it is their responsibility to preserve the bit of the country they love - their homes, neighbourhoods and communities.

Local elections are the perfect platform for people to play a part in electing the sort of leadership they want to represent them when it comes to making important decisions, and ensuring they choose leaders who will stand up for their values and deliver services.

Helping to spread the message of "Love your South Africa" is the official elections song, which has as much joie de vivre as the logo itself. It has a mix of South African languages, which translate to the main message of "Love your South Africa", and reminds people to go vote.

With popular artists such as Hashi Elimhlophe, Winnie Khumalo and Kholeka, the song has the potential to stay in South Africans' minds long after the ink has dried on ballot papers.

The official election date has not yet been announced, but it should be between 2 March and 2 June 2011.

For those who have not yet registered, voting stations will be open around the country on February 5 and 6. If you have moved since the last election, you should re-register at your new voting districting as you will only be able to vote where you live.
