Pretoria - The Gauteng Department of Education has delayed the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) orientation scheduled for the October holidays to the fourth term.
Department spokesperson Charles Phahlane said the decision to delay the training was based on representation from some teacher unions that the October break was short and that the majority of affected teachers had attended training in January before schools opened, as well as during the April and July school holidays.
"Every school holiday since January, they [teachers] had training but the unions have asked to take a break this coming holiday ... and schedule it for the fourth term. The department is renegotiating the training for the fourth term and [will] decide the date," Phahlane told BuaNews.
He emphasised that the department was still committed to provide support to all teachers to ensure that schools and teachers were ready to implement CAPS in Foundation Phase (Grades 1 to 3) and Grade 10 in 2012.
CAPS is a single, comprehensive and concise policy document which will replace the current Subject and Learning Area Statements, Learning Programme Guidelines and Subject Assessment Guidelines for all the subjects listed in the National Curriculum Statement for Grades R - 12.
CAPS will provide clear guidelines on what teachers ought to teach and assess on a grade-by-grade and subject basis. - BuaNews
